Candace is a 54-year-old divorced mother of two that works at her local Tractor Supply store. She does not have access to health insurance but does receive routine care from her local health center. Candace began to experience G.I. pain and was referred to a gastroenterologist for a colonoscopy. Unable to come up with $1000 in fees upfront, she never saw that doctor.

Later that year, CHW was able to expand services to Candace’s local clinic and she was given a FIT test to which she tested positive. She was promptly referred to CHW, scheduled for an appointment with a gastroenterologist and subsequently a colonoscopy. Immediately after a colonoscopy, gastroenterologist personally called with the news that Candace had invasive colon cancer. The doctor was certain, even before pathology reports were obtained.

CHW navigated Candace through the process of enrolling in Cancer State Aid at a local hospital where she had her cancer surgically removed earlier this year. Candace and her doctors are currently making further treatment decisions, but they are optimistic. She credits CHW’s screening program with helping her catch her cancer in time.
