A Statewide Movement to Reduce the Burden of Cancer

At the heart of Georgia’s cancer control efforts is the Georgia Cancer Control Consortium (GC3)— a statewide partnership of organizations and individuals dedicated to reducing the burden of cancer for all Georgians.

Since its founding in 2003, GC3 has served as the driving force behind Georgia’s approach to cancer prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment, palliative care, and survivorship. GC3 brings alignment and shared purpose to Georgia’s statewide cancer control efforts, ensuring that no matter where someone lives, they have access to the tools, care, and support needed to prevent, detect, treat, and survive cancer.

GC3 is convened by the Georgia Department of Public Health and includes a diverse coalition of over 100 organizations and individuals from sectors including:

  • Public health agencies
  • Hospitals and health systems
  • Federally qualified health centers
  • Cancer researchers and academic institutions
  • Community-based organizations
  • Advocacy groups, and
  • Survivors and caregivers

To support the implementation of the plan at both the statewide and community level, the state legislature provides dedicated funding to two key partners:

The Regional Cancer Coalitions of Georgia, which implement local strategies through direct outreach, screenings, navigation services, and community engagement across the state.

Georgia CORE (Georgia Center for Oncology Research and Education), which leads statewide initiatives related to clinical quality, provider education, cancer research, and survivorship.

Together, these partners work alongside the broader GC3 network to ensure that Georgia’s cancer plan is more than a document—it’s a coordinated, community-powered movement toward lasting change.

How the Consortium Works

GC3 operates through a structured and collaborative model to ensure effective implementation of the Georgia Cancer Plan. At the center is a Steering Team that provides overall leadership and guidance. Five priority-focused Workgroups and several cancer-specific Roundtables lead implementation of the Georgia Cancer Plan, while cross-cutting subcommittees support shared goals in areas like health equity, communications, data, and policy. This structure brings together partners from every sector—ensuring the plan is driven by expertise, informed by community needs, and united by a shared mission to reduce cancer in Georgia.

Steering Team

At the center of the Consortium’s effort is a diverse, multi-organizational, 36-member Steering Team that oversees the effort.  This team provides strategic guidance, tracks implementation progress, and ensures equity is embedded across all priorities.

Workgroups

Each of the plan’s five priority areas is supported by a dedicated workgroup, composed of subject matter experts, practitioners, and advocates. Workgroups meet regularly to direct and monitor the strategies outlined in the plan.

Roundtables

To address high-burden cancer types, GC3 has launched several cancer-specific roundtables. These groups develop targeted strategies for improving prevention, screening, and treatment for:

 

  • Lung cancer
  • Colorectal cancer
  • Prostate cancer

Cross-Cutting Subcommittees

In addition to the Steering Team, Workgroups, and Roundtables, three subcommittees provide cross-cutting support to ensure the success of the entire Consortium. Together, these subcommittees strengthen collaboration and alignment across all areas of the plan.
